Veterinary Exam, Lingual Puncture Wound Check: Patient placed under general Isoflurane anesthesia, mask induction and intubated with 3 Cole tube for maintenance. Tongue examined today shows healing focal, circular puncture wound in the process of healing. The wound is approximately 4-5 mm diameter. There was moderate amount of fibrous material present on the surface of the wound. This was gently cleansed with chlorhexidine and the fibrous tissue was gently removed. Standing in corner, but runs away when approached. Did flap wings evenly but didn't fly. Caught up to look at wings. There are odd dystrophic feathers on both wings, in the area of the missing primaries (8 or 9 through 10 missing on both wings). If primaries, they are definitely not developing normally. See pictures. The right keel did feel slightly less muscular than the left, but not striking. Tongue looks fine - wound is healed. Since bird is alert, eating well, and there are no neuro signs I recommended moving to a larger enclosure with more sun. Check primaries in 2 weeks. Weigh weekly if eating well. Consider radiographs to check primary regrowth if not clear what is going on. I see he is on a feather check 8/05, so will adjust my plan for 8/10 depending on what is found Ate right away when moved. Checked later, not trying to fly but standing in water. NOTE: I know there were concerns about mercury poisoning because of where he was found. We had asked this question a lot in South Florida, because of the obvious large number of fish-eater macro predators. To my knowledge, there is no good ante-mortem way to test for mercury poisoning, and not really any knowledge of "normals". The only thing to possibly mitigate this toxicity is vitamin E/ selenium (as an anti-oxidant). There are a ton of feather lice that swarm off of him as we start the exam. The right side of the keel is very thin, with the muscle that is left is squishy. The left side is a 2.5. Both wings are missing the outer primaries. I marked them as missing for now, but there are some that have small new feathers in blood and more feathers shafts that look like the feathers were broken off at the skin level. Tested for lead and collected blood for cbc/pcv. Moved out for quarantine this weekend. Will swab for AI testing on Monday Treatment 120cc LRS SQ 231g F
